Day 2
We left Tess’s apartment a little after 9 AM, and after a quick stop at Home Depot to pick up some bungee chords to tie down a couple bags on top of the van, we left for Eugene. Five hours later, after a breakfast of PB&J and a lunch of ham sandwiches prepared in the van, we arrived in Eugene to meet Cole. Cole showed us his apartment and guided us across the University of Oregon campus. It was cool to share with the guys the area where I’ll be going to school this fall. After saying our goodbyes to Cole, we left Eugene and drove about three hours to Coos Bay, where we had dinner at a small surf and turf restaurant right across the street from the Egyptian Theatre. We took a scenic route, surrounded by green, lush hills and pastures, reminding me of photos I’ve seen of Ireland. Coos Bay seemed like a nice town though I can’t speak very highly of its inhabitants. We would have a photo of us in Coos bay to show, but the man we asked, preferred not to take our picture. Oh well. We decided we hadn’t had enough driving yet, continuing for another couple hours to Gold Beach. On our way, we had our first run in with the law, as we were pulled over by an officer in Bandon, for going 46 in a 30. After realizing that were not his average law breakers, the officer politely apologized and sent us on our way, unscathed. We arrived in Gold Beach around 11:30 PM and got a room at a Motel 6 for the night. We drove somewhere around 10 hours today and covered 489 miles. Tomorrow we plan to explore the coast for a while before continuing to the Redwoods of Northern California, and then on to the Stempe’s house in Kelseyville, CA (2.5 hours out of San Francisco).
