Day 11 (Phoenix)

Day 11

June 15th

Slept in late and left the hotel around noon for a hearty breakfast at Denny’s.  After eating, we went to a mall in Scottsdale to do some shopping in the air-conditioned building, before checking into our a second hotel, the Hilton Garden Inn, in Phoenix. Temperatures were high again today, reaching 108 at one point. On our way over to the hotel, we stopped at a small roadside store for some cold, refreshing shaved ice.  We checked into our room at the Hilton, and Riley, Micah, and I hung out in the room while Peter and Alex went to another nearby clothing store to shop. When they got back, we took off for the ballgame in Phoenix, maybe 10 minutes away, for our last game of the trip. After finding our seats, in the third deck out in right field, we sat down for what was yet another entertaining game of baseball. The evening was highlighted by getting on the Jumbo Tron (large screen in the stadium) twice, while holding Riley’s American flag that he brought from Juneau. The Giants held a tight 3-2 advantage heading into the 9th inning, and were able to tack on two more with an RBI triple by catcher Eli Whiteside, who later scored on a wild pitch to extend the San Francisco lead, and put the game out of reach. Chase Field was a great stadium with uncommon attractions like a swimming pool out beyond the right-center wall. It was hot, but not unbearable watching the game. After the game, we headed back to the hotel to do some laundry and watch the movie, The Town, before going to bed. Tomorrow we plan to drive the 5 + hours up to Las Vegas to spend the night in a suite and see what all the hubbub’s about.
